Saguaro Cactus Carnegiea gigantea is an arborescent (tree-like) cactus which can grow to be over 40 feet tall. It is native to extreme southern California and Arizona. The growth rate of saguaros is strongly dependent on precipitation; saguaros in drier areas grow only half as fast as those that experience more common monsoonal moisture.
Saguaros grow slowly from seed,, and cannot be propagated in any other way. They can store very large quantities of water to get them through extended dry periods. A "thirsty" Saguaro will start lo look "thin," and will visibly swell when it is able to absorb rain water. This is a species that will use water slowly, which helps it to survive long drought periods.
